Suzanne Newell Death, Obituary Homer, Louisiana – With deep sorrow, the community of Homer, Louisiana, mourns the passing of one of its most cherished residents, Suzanne Newell, who peacefully passed away on May 12, 2025, at the age of 68. Suzanne’s life was marked by a profound sense of duty to her family, her students, and her community, and her legacy of love, service, and faith will continue to inspire those who were fortunate to know her.
Suzanne was born and raised in Claiborne Parish, where she spent the majority of her life contributing to the growth and well-being of her hometown. A dedicated educator, Suzanne spent over 30 years in Homer’s public schools, where she made a lasting impact on generations of students. Her commitment to her students was unwavering, and she was known for her gentle yet effective teaching style, which emphasized empathy, patience, and the value of kindness.
Outside the classroom, Suzanne’s life was dedicated to service in the community. She was an active member of First Baptist Church of Homer, where she played a vital role in leading women’s ministry events and organizing outreach programs to help those in need. Suzanne’s faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was deeply involved in efforts to uplift underserved families in Claiborne Parish. Her kindness and generosity left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered.
In her personal life, Suzanne was a devoted wife to Thomas Newell, whom she shared 45 years of marriage with. Together, they raised three children—Marcus, Diane, and Carla—who grew up under the guidance of their mother’s nurturing spirit. Suzanne’s love for her children was immeasurable, and she found great joy in her role as a grandmother to six grandchildren: Isaiah, Taylor, Noah, Ava, Elise, and Camden. Her family was her pride and joy, and her home was always filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of shared moments.
Suzanne is also survived by her sister, Ellen Parker, and was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mae Harper, and her brother, Donald Harper. Her family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from the community during her final days.
A celebration of Suzanne’s life will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Homer, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. The service will be officiated by Pastor Gerald Thomas, and Suzanne will be laid to rest at Arlington Cemetery, where she will be honored by family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the Newell family asks that donations be made to two of Suzanne’s most beloved causes: the Homer Women’s Shelter and the Claiborne Parish Library Foundation. Suzanne’s love for these organizations was a reflection of her commitment to serving others and her belief in the power of community.
